Our opinion: Lots of treats in seasonal happenings

2 min read

In terms of consumer popularity, Halloween is becoming a real treat for retailers. In a survey conducted for the National Retail Federation's annual consumer survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics, it's expected that $13.5 billion will be expensed in America in preparation for the Oct. 31 day.

"Consumers continue to make Halloween a spending priority, but they are also approaching the season with affordability in mind," NRF Vice President of Industry and Consumer Insights Allison Zeller said. "For more than two decades, NRF's Halloween survey has tracked how consumers celebrate the holiday, and this year's results show that shoppers are being thoughtful and strategic, looking for ways to maximize value throughout the season. Retailers understand these priorities and are offering a wide range of products across price points, making it easier for consumers to celebrate in ways that fit their budgets."

That's a lot of costumes and candy.

When it comes to Thanksgiving, that is the second most popular of holidays in America, according to lendingtree.com. That survey shows 56% of households are expecting to spend more than $100 on the November day's festivities.

According to our recent online poll, maybe affordability has something to do with it. Our weekly question, "What is your favorite autumn holiday?" favored Thanksgiving by a 76% to 24% margin over Halloween.

Those results are far from frightening.
