There appears to be some momentum growing for the city's riverfront. Last week, a proposed master plan envisioned a sweeping transformation of the area between the Hickory Street Bridge and Conewango Creek, with expanded recreational opportunities, improved access to the Allegheny River, new gathering spaces and connections to downtown.
City Mayor Dave Wortman during the event Sept. 10 said the project grew out of the city’s comprehensive planning process, which identified development of the riverfront as a high priority. Council adopted the comprehensive plan in 2023.
“This is a transformational project,” the mayor said, emphasizing the potential to strengthen Warren as a place where people want to live, work and spend time.
City officials, designers and community partners unveiled the conceptual plan during a public presentation, describing the project as a potential long-term investment in Warren’s future.
Some of the proposed improvements would include a boat launch, playground, a drop-off area for kayakers as well as a walking loop.
While the presentation was upbeat -- residents here may not be as positive about its future. In last week's poll, "Are you optimistic about the future of the Warren riverfront?" 66% said "no" and 34% said "yes."
