Residents around Warren County have plenty to choose from when you consider the plethora of Fourth of July events and fireworks planned for the upcoming weekend. Not only is it a major celebration of summer — but about our great country that turns 250 years old.

Even though the spotlight is greater in 2026, this celebration is nothing like 50 years ago when the nation proudly marked 200 years. In 1976, patriotism abounded — even though we were healing from the Vietnam War and a shake-up in the presidency due to the Watergate scandal.

In this era, America seems to be at a fork in the road. About four in 10 U.S. adults feel “proud” about the country’s 250th anniversary, according to a new survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Roughly three in 10 say “excited” describes their emotions.

Our timesobserver.com poll also finds a mix of enthusiasm. In the question: “Are you planning to celebrate the upcoming 250th birthday of America by attending a parade or event?” about 51% said “no” while the other 49% said “yes.”

While some of those numbers are cause for concern, patriotism remains strong in our region as numerous U.S. flags are displayed at homes in neighborhoods and at area businesses.
