Our opinion: Brown’s plan worthy of support

District Attorney Cody Brown has a lot on his plate early in his first term.

We’re glad to see the former first assistant district attorney isn’t content with the status quo. Even before being elected, Brown proposed the Web Response Against Traffickers and Harmers unit, a specialized investigative unit of local law enforcement officers committed to protecting children from online exploitation. WRATH was billed last year as a unit that would target offenders who attempt to victimize children through online communication or by possessing and distributing child pornography.

Last week, a little more than three months into his term, Brown spoke publicly about additional plans for the District Attorney’s office. Consider us intrigued.

Brown wants to form a cold case task force to collaborate with local police departments to review unsolved cases and suspicious deaths across the county. That’s a worthy effort in and of itself, but Brown wants to do more. He also is proposing to bring the county’s drug task force back under the District Attorney’s control. Currently, the task force operates under the state Attorney General’s Office. Brown also wants to increase public crime reporting through the DA’s office with quarterly reports that include data on offenses such as DUI classifications, theft trends, and other criminal activity. That effort is likely to include an effort to recruit interns who can assist with casework while under supervision.

And, by the way, Brown is handling a full load of cases in court, too.

Brown is attacking his first few months as district attorney aggressively. While only time will tell how many of Brown’s plans come to fruition – or how many of these plans bear fruit if they do become reality – the district attorney’s activity and willingness to change the status quo is noteworthy.
