Our opinion: Improved sign brightens holiday

The addition of LED lights to the trees behind the “Warren Wishes You Merry Christmas Happy New Year” sign along the Allegheny River at Crescent Park are a splendid addition to the holiday season in Warren.

Nine sponsors have donated enough money to light nine trees behind the sign, with donations still being accepted. Business owners can have a tree decorated and a plaque will display the business name near the tree. In addition to those nine trees, a community tree will be the largest tree along the area and this year they aim to cover in lights as much as possible on the nearly 100 foot tall tree.

So far, in all, $10,000 has been donated and all names from those that donated will be recognized.

Plans are to add to the Christmas spectacle each year. KOPE Services has helped WCCBI, which led the project, to come up with a plan for professional installation, in-season maintenance, and secure storage.

One of those additions to the Christmas spectacle in Warren should be bringing some new Christmas spirit to the “Warren Wishes You Merry Christmas Happy New Year” sign as well. Lighting the trees behind the sign is wonderful, but it also helps show the age of one of Warren’s most notable holiday landmarks. The sign needs some TLC if it is to remain the centerpiece of the holiday season along the Allegheny River.

The community came together to raise money to light trees at Crescent Park. We have no doubt the community will come together to make the “Warren Wishes You Merry Christmas Happy New Year” sign brighter than ever, too.

Starting at $3.50/week.
