Our opinion: County transparent on Kibbey case
Shortly after Kibbey’s resignation was made public, we asked those involved to be transparent as the investigation continued and as the fallout from the incident became evident.
It would have been easy for Warren County officials to simply paper over the Kibbey affair and proceed as if the whole sordid affair had never happened. To their credit, they haven’t done that.
Court officials released the charging documents that included statements from the state Attorney General’s Office investigator as soon as the charges were filed. There was zero delay releasing that information to the media when reporters asked for the information. That doesn’t happen everywhere.
District Attorney Rob Greene was open last week when he announced the District Attorney’s office is withdrawing charges against 11 defendants in cases in which Kibbey played a major role, with a review ongoing to see if charges can proceed in cases that Kibbey played a minor role investigating.
The charges against Kibbey are damaging to the public trust in law enforcement – but being open about the incident and its fallout helps fix that damage. Greene made note of that in his statement last week, saying, “A District Attorney’s obligation is not only to prosecute crime, but to do so fairly with unwavering respect for the Rule of Law,” Greene said. “Above all, honor and integrity must be preserved in the criminal justice system. I will not allow the misconduct of one law enforcement officer to undermine the justice system as a whole in Warren County. I owe that to victims, defendants, law enforcement and all the people in Warren County.”
We couldn’t agree more. So far the county is holding up its end of the bargain.
