Our opinion: Expansion is good sign for city

Superior Tire has a more than 60-year history in Warren.

A possible expansion project at the facility can only be a positive for the city. City Council members will have a chance to help further that expansion in the coming weeks by abandoning an unopened street that extends from the old Route 6 right of way along the southeast line of the Warren company’s property. Superior Tire & Rubber Corp.owns all the property adjacent to the unopened road, Randy Rossey, city codes officer, told council members, and the abandoned road ends at the Superior Tire property.

A required public hearing will be held on the street abandonment before the council’s May 19 meeting.

We spend so much time talking about contraction in our region that it’s almost foreign to hear of expansion – whether it’s our population or one of our businesses. After celebrating Superior Tire’s 60th anniversary last year, this expansion project signals to us that we should be celebrating more such milestones in the future. Superior Tire has more than 375 employees who produce nearly 1.3 million parts annually at three manufacturing plants in Warren. The company has employees securing new patents and making award-winning presentations at trade shows. This possible expansion project is driven by the company’s excellence in its field, and that includes creating new products like the AgriTraxx AirCore – a high-performance gauge wheel tire intended for no-till agricultural applications.

As Mayor Dave Wortman said, these are the types of issues that one wants to hear coming before the City Council. We hope there is more such news coming down the pipe.

Starting at $3.50/week.
