Our opinion: Unveiling a new waterfront plan

There is yet another design being proposed for Warren’s downtown waterfront.

Original plans for the Liberty Street boat launch had to change because of the presence of mussels in the river – meaning the project can’t use as much of the river as originally planned.

The city will hold a public engagement session on the new plan, the fourth thus far, at 6 p.m. Monday at the Allegheny Community Center. Much of the discussion will be led by city engineer Chad Yurisic, who told the Times Observer last week the new design is a hybrid between the city’s initial proposal and two put forward by the Warren County Chamber of Business and Industry. The design will accommodate both motorized and non-motorized – canoes and kayaks — kinds of watercraft.

There’s been a lot of interest in the city’s plans for the riverfront. Not everyone was happy with the original plan for the river – and they were vocal in their opposition. New plans were brought forward that some liked and others did not. Timelines to spend money that has been secured for this project are approaching quickly — so this may be Warren residents’ best and last chance to make their opinions known about what will happen on the river.

Those who want to learn more should do all they can to be at Monday’s meeting.
