Our opinion: Another attempt for hotel site

Ten years ago, the Youngsville Borough Council was looking for money to demolish the former Fairmont Hotel building in Youngsville.

The money never came — and the building that council members wanted to see gone spent a decade deteriorating.

It’s no wonder council members had a laundry list worth of questions for Nathaniel Weaver, the building’s new owner, during the council’s most recent meeting. A portion of the roof has fallen in and there have long been concerns about the building’s structural integrity. Those concerns make sense given the building’s past history.

We hope Weaver is able to realize his vision for the Fairmont. He says the building is sound, work is expected to begin repairing the roof and Weaver told council members he has plans to remodel the building in a period-appropriate style that includes custom windows, tin ceilings and period wallpaper.

The Fairmont Hotel has a long way to go before returning to its former glory. And it will be interesting to see what type of business plan Weaver comes up with for the building once his planned work is finished. But it’s good to see, at least for now, that there is a plan for a piece of historic Youngsville.

Starting at $3.50/week.
