Our opinion: Council transparency a no-brainer

Absolutely nothing bad can come from making more information open to the public,

In that vein, kudos to the Warren City Council for an item on the April meeting agenda to expand the public information made available before meetings. Councilmen John Wortman and Phil Gilbert have asked to place a resolution on the April agenda — Mayor Wortman granted that request — to expand the public information made available prior to meetings. Currently, agendas for city council meetings are published the Friday before but just as a one line subject, with no further explanation.

If approved by the council, the agenda would require each item to come with a description of what is being considered, a cost if applicable as well as “any publicly accessible attachment. Eventually the council could use a system similar to the Warren County School District.

As we said, nothing bad can from making information available before a meeting. It’s a way to build interest, allows the public to better understand the items the council will be discussing and may improve the public discourse between the council and the public it serves. In our opinion, this is a step in the right direction that should be approved.
