Our opinion: Mapping a plan for road work

April showers will bring summer road construction this year in Warren County — and this year that means work on several main thoroughfares.

Road work in 2023 is likely to be highlighted by the roundabout at Market Street and Pennsylvania Avenue but several other sizable projects are planned for major roadways in the county.

The stretch of 62 from Hatch Run Road to the New York state line is part of a $4.95 million resurfacing project. On Route 62, a $1.6 million resurfacing project is on tap for the stretch of road south of the Route 6 interchange. That work is planned to be completed by May 31, 2024, and includes an additional $1 million in work to the bridge over Lenhart Run. Weight restrictions were placed on that bridge back in 2021, forcing vehicles over the limit to use alternate routes including Route 6 and routes 27 and 36. The bridge dates to 1928 and is classified as in poor condition. PennDOT says about 1,000 vehicles use the bridge daily. A $6.8 million restoration project will cover Main Avenue in Warren to Yankee Bush Road in Starbrick along Route 6. Along with that will come $2.4 million in bridge rehabilitation to the bridges along that stretch, including the smart bridge as well as the bridge over the Allegheny River near Betts Park.

Much of this work is necessary. Bridge replacements are too often postponed due to their cost and the sheer number of bridges that need serious work.

Detours are a pain but are less painful than being on a bridge when it fails. And the Route 6 and Route 62 work, while a headache for a short time, will result in better roads for years to come.

As for the roundabout, what else is there to say? It’s a project that no one really seems to want but that we’re all going to have to deal with once spring arrives.
