Our opinion: Volunteers pave way for cleaner roads

Rob DeVaul, Tracy Langworthy, Alicia Corey, Paula DeVaul, Shawn Rodgers, Rachel Bines, Marty Fuchs, and Tim Tannler recently made a difference while on Hemlock Road. The group, also known as the Warren Hooligans, were part of the PennDOT’s Adopt-a-Highway program.

As part of a spring cleaning near Chapman Dam Road, the group volunteered three important hours. After the snow has melted and spring arrives, debris and trash begins to rear its ugly head. Those, like the Hooligans who help out, bring out the best in Warren County.

For the record, there’s plenty more roads that need the same type of care. Ed Dorunda, PennDOT’s Adopt-a-Highway coordinator for the county, notes the agency offers the needed supplies including bags, vests and gloves. All that asked is the groups help clean their roads at least twice a year.

Anyone interested in adopting some highway can reach Dorunda from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at (814) 723-3500. “I will assist with finding a road to adopt and answer any questions,” he said.

Starting at $3.50/week.
