Our opinion: Creating a racket with pickleball

Across America, pickleball has picked up steam as a popular recreational sport, especially with the 65 and older generation. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

For those who have never seen the game in action, it looks like a downsized tennis match.

Last week, the sport was a topic at Warren City Council as the Warren Pickleball Club is trying to iron out potential issues with regard to the construction of courts at Betts Park. Needless to say, there is a bit of volleying going on between the sides.

The club approached the council asking for assistance on costs to cover a legal opinion as well as engineering and inspection fees. The legal opinion addressed the propriety of the city leasing the court space to the club during construction.

City Manager Nancy Freenock said she is working with the club on an agreement that aims to save some of the legal fees but no formal motion came before council.

Nothing comes easy in this day and age.

However, we hope a quick resolution can be worked out between the city and club. Otherwise, this could be a pickle of a very different sort.

Starting at $3.50/week.
