Some children sailed through the 2020-21 academic year with no problem regardless of whether they spent the year learning at home or only attended school half-days.
Not all children fared so well, however, and some parents are concerned that their children haven't mastered the material they will need for the coming school year.
And as long as that is the overarching concern for parents, then parents should have a say in whether or not their child repeats a grade.
The state Legislature has approved legislation that would give parents the option of allowing their children to repeat a grade level. That legislation is waiting for Gov. Tom Wolf's signature. Wolf should sign the bill.
The legislation has a mid-July deadline for parents to make a decision, and continued dallying by Wolf cuts down on parents' time to make an informed decision.
Secondly, the legislation also gives students with an individualized education plan who have turned 21 and aged out of school since the disaster emergency proclamation on March 6, 2020, to continue their enrollment in school for remainder of 2021-22 academic year. Making sure these students are taken care of is incredibly important.
Senate Bill 664 should be embraced by Wolf and given serious consideration by parents.
