Sweet music from area band

Not even a pandemic can stop the beautiful music emanating from Youngsville.

The band’s trophy case is full of awards from the last nine years — Youngsville has won western Pennsylvania region championships in eight of those years and had two seconds and a third at the Atlantic Coast Championships. Youngsville won’t get a trophy for its 2020 U.S. Virtual Bands state championship, but this state championship is perhaps sweeter than the rest.

Musicians found out earlier this year that the typical Tournament of Bands wouldn’t be having live competitions this year. Band Director Cindy Scheid found the U.S. Virtual Bands competition as a substitute, which meant the students continued to practice for two-and-a-half hours after school four times a week, but instead of performing live each week for at a competition the band sent in a new video each week.

The results are typical for the Youngsville student musicians even though they found themselves competing against twice the number of Pennsyvlania high school bands.

Winning the Pennsylvania championship also means that the band’s most recent video is being entered for the U.S. Virtual Bands national competition, with a video submitted on Saturday being the band’s grand finale.

Keep making that beautiful music, Youngsville students, and best of luck in the national competition.
