In September, the National Park Service announced it would provide $98,000 for a project to honor the legacy of the Black Panther Party.

The money was to go to the University of California at Berkeley.

One wonders whether the park service would have paid that much to honor the legacy of one of its own, Ranger Kenneth Patrick, who was murdered while on the job in 1973. Patrick was killed by a member of the Black Panther Party.

It took a letter from the Fraternal Order of Police to President Donald Trump to get the park service grant rescinded this week.

Violence was at the foundation of the Black Panther Party, as those who remember it understand.

Here’s a thought for the park service: Why not spend $98,000 honoring victims of the Black Panther Party and its adherents — and there were others.

Or would that not be politically correct?
