My priorities are as follows

In this weight loss journey that I’ve been on, I’ve done a lot of online reading about nutrition and diets.

I’m looking for recipes, ideas, and I even look at food that’s not very health for me.

Does that make it food pornography? Thinking about it, I do close it quickly if my wife sneaks up on me.

Even though I’m bound and determined to lose weight, I like food. Food makes me happy. I like the smell of food. I like to eat food.

I just have to do it in a sensible manner.

I have to eat in moderation.

Instead of having a steak with cheesy-fried potatoes and coleslaw, I have a steak with a half cup of mashed potatoes and steamed brussel sprouts.

It comes down to simple math: a six-ounce Delmonico has 390 calories, or 65 calories an ounce. The ever-so-delicious, but incredibly unhealthy, cheesy-fried potatoes that we used to make had roughly 875 calories per serving and coleslaw has 290 calories per cup.

In the old days, I would eat 1,555 calories when I had steak.

Last Saturday, when I had a steak, I had a 390-calorie Delmonico, 110 calories in mashed potatoes (1/2 cup) and 70 calories of brussel sprouts (2 cups) – 570 calories. I’ve cut almost 1,000 calories by simply controlling portions and eating healthier.

The other thing I like to read about is different workouts and how people have handled their weight-loss journeys.

I’ll be the first to admit; I hate walking and running on a treadmill. I get terrible vertigo.

I like to do my walking and running outdoors. This mild winter has helped accommodate that a lot but there are still times I need to find ways to work up a sweat so I turn to the internet for suggestions.

Whenever you’re reading online about different workouts, you get into the lectures by “personal trainers” that usually turn into diatribes about priorities.

That it’s never a matter of time; it’s a matter of higher priorities.

The reason I have personal trainers in quotes is because everyone online is a personal trainer. Online, everyone is an expert in his or her own minds.

So, I take what they say in stride.

But they’re right; it is all about priorities and how you manage your time.

My priorities are as follows: 1. My wife and kids. 1b. My job. 1c. My health.

Why is my health number 1c?

It directly relates to 1a and 1b. I need to be healthy to be successful with 1a and 1b. I need 1b to be successful with 1a and 1c.

That’s the thing about priorities – they’re all intertwined.

Assigning a numerical value or a higher value to one priority over the other gives your priorities, priority. That feels like an oxymoron.

If you’re passionate about something, live life to its fullest and give everything 100 percent. If you’re not passionate about it, why do it?

So that’s my message for today: live life to the fullest, do what you love, and love what you do. If you don’t love what you’re doing, find that thing you love and do it.

Since I’m a baseball fan, I love stats. Here are some stats: old pant size, 48, new pant size, 38; old t-shirt size, XXXL, new, XL, and the strangest one to me, old neck size, 21 inches, new neck size, 19 inches.

I’ve lost 105 pounds since starting my life change.

Starting at $3.50/week.
