Who's at the wheel?

Dear Editor,

Have any of you witnessed, like I have, the constant increase of infractions on the streets and sidewalks here in Warren? Vehicles roll through stop signs, drive through red lights or first slow down and then proceed through without the use of turn signals (mainly in the roundabout) on regular occasions.

There is speeding in general and through school zones, bicycles or E-bikes and skateboards riding on the sidewalks, vehicles parked on the sidewalks, vehicles parked right next to stop signs which block the crosswalks and view of the pedestrian all day everyday. In addition, there are vehicles blocking homeowner's driveways, failing to yield when required to do so, school buses loaded with children running stop signs (yes the big yellow things without seatbelts in them)?

There are more but I think you get my gist.

When does it end? Is it going to take someone to get seriously injured or killed? Let’s hope not! We all know that most children are preoccupied with everything else other than their own safety, which is nothing new so when vehicle operators are not following the rules of the road pedestrians are much more at risk. It’s much like the borders of our country, the laws are already on the books they just need to be enforced. As any common sense thinking person can see it’s working rather well at the border it just took someone with a backbone to make it happen.

The reason all this is happening is obvious, there is not nearly enough being done to deter or stop it plain and simple! If someone is allowed to do something knowing it is wrong and because it benefits them they will continue to do it as long as there are no consequences for their actions!

Law enforcement, I back you, I support you, I stand with you! But at the end of the day you were hired to do a job so please do it before someone gets hurt or killed. Yes I know that the left side of the political spectrum, which includes the far left Democrats, liberals, socialist, and the communists (there is no difference these days) has dealt you a repeating bad hand by trying to abolish and defund the police time after time. But here in Warren we are better than that, minus a few at the weekly Saturday circus standing outside the County courthouse. They are too busy trying to come up with a definition of a woman or deciding which bathroom to use. They don’t care about American citizen safety as long as their illegal aliens are taken care of first and foremost. After all, they get a lot of votes from them!

Drivers are always being targeted for aggressive driving as they should be but I am willing to bet that aggressive driving that day began with one or more of the above infractions that people have been getting away with way too long! I completely understand that not every infraction can be caught but to not see some or a lot of them on a daily basis one would have to be blind.

I propose a few more police officers, more proactive policing with officers walking the streets, and a truckload of ticket books so that the wrongdoers are held accountable before it’s too late! Who knows I just may be one of those wrongdoers someday especially after writing this letter but if I am wrong I more than deserve the penalty that fits the crime! Yes I know with that proposal comes a higher cost, but what is the price cap here in America on an American citizen’s safety or life!

We need accountability

Dear Editor,

Recently the Times Observer contained a letter that focused on perceived hypocrisy among Trump critics. The letter did not deny the critics' claims. Rather, the letter used the old "the pot calling the kettle black" assessment.

This attitude that "all politicians are crooks" does not distinguish between minor versus major crimes. Stealing an apple and robbing a bank get judged the same, a crime is a crime.

In 2020, thousands marched in Portland, Ore., to protest the murder of George Floyd. The throwing of a fire bomb at the front door of a federal courthouse by an unauthorized small band was the basis for Trump's labeling the marchers "terrorists."

The entire march was deemed a major crime.

Whereas, Trump called the pro Trump mob that attacked the Capitol in 2021 "patriots." Trump granted full pardons to the 1,500 arrested who were responding to the call to come to Washington and "fight like hell" and do whatever was "necessary" to prevent the transfer of political authority.

As of Oct. 3, 2025, Trump's ICE stopped counting the number of miscarriages among illegal and legal pregnant detainees. They stopped counting at 18, the same number of American soldiers Trump acknowledges having been killed in his economy ruining war with Iran.

This stark lack of distinction is the basis for many citizens to condemn totally our government and political leaders, not a healthy thing for our representative democracy.

Our government of, by, and for the people requires citizen participation. There has to be accountability to remain the country we want for our grandchildren and that others risk life and limb to enter.

The present regime with its misdeeds and criminality, and its submissive supporters, must be held accountable. This November will be the time to hold our see nothing, hear nothing, say nothing, rubber stamp, career politician U.S. Rep. Glenn "G.T." Thompson accountable.

Thompson holds no Town Hall meetings. He pops in, meets with a few local GOP leaders, has a photo op and moves on. The voters do not get an opportunity to ask why he supports Trump 96% of the time, why he does not oppose Trump's Iran War actions, tariffs, cut backs on rural medical care, and disastrous cost of living policies. We are taken for granted.

Final thought: If Barack Obama had banned Fox News from the White House or had displayed any of Trump's despicable personal behavior or if we had economy wreaking results of Trump's policies under Obama would we have thought "business as usual, they're all crooks," not voted and not swept him and his supporters out of office?

If this election were to be summarized in one word, that word would be accountability. There are good candidates waiting for your support.

It is not a question of hypocrisy. It's a question of accountability and policies that work.

Don Scott,

North Warren
