Changing patterns

Dear Editor,

This time Trump’s position on the Epstein File is different, again.

Trump backed off after a sufficient number of Republican legislators joined the Democratic legislators demanding the release of the Epstein files. Trump uttered his abrupt reversal, from all out opposition to release, to release. When presented with the Epstein Transparency Act for his signature, Trump did so in private, so unlike his usual staged public signings.

Trump’s recent acceptance statement followed his usual “doubling down,” his denying of the files’ importance, his insulting news reporters when they ask about the Epstein issue, and his accusing the file’s release a Democratic Party “witch hunt – there’s nothing there.”

Trump’s resistance to transparency and release was opposite his demand for the file’s release during his presidential campaigns, implying evil doings between Jeffrey Epstein and former President Clinton and other prominent Democrats. Hillary Clinton was accused of running a child sex trafficking ring out of a pizza restaurant which led to Pizza Gate. Remember?

This time there are a growing number of Trump supporters speaking out. Public Opinion polls show a steady decline of public support. A Fox News Poll has 76% viewing Trump’s economic policies harmful. Federal courts are ruling against Trump’s misuse of executive power. Trump’s advancing age is getting more apparent as Trump continues his “this is America’s golden age” con and ordinary people struggle paycheck to paycheck confronting increases in medical care costs and increases in living expenses.

Meanwhile, we wait for transparency. Will the complete Epstein File be made public? Will the corrupted privileged among us continue trampling on our Declaration of Independence’s most important core belief “that all men are created equal under the law?”

It was this belief that was central to our Revolutionary War 250 years ago and elevates our country, still, over other nations according to Ken Burn’s latest documentary and Walter Isaacson’s newest book.

Is this the time to restore Thomas Paine’s “soul of America?” Is this the tipping point? Is this time different?
