Buying from home

Dear Editor,

Recently, dozens of container ships waited for days to unload at West Coast ports. Ultimately, some containers are hauled by trucks. Huge numbers are hauled by trains.

Such “double-stacked” trains regularly move through Erie as well as the Horseshoe Curve at Altoona. CSX trains average 7,500 feet long and Norfolk Southern averages 7,000 feet

The situation is a clear reminder of our heavy reliance on imports. In September, our trade deficit was $80.9 billion, according to tradingeconomics.com

Another reminder is the word “imported” on product descriptions of well known clothing retailers. Some of us would pay more for an American-made product — if we can find it! If budgets are tight, it’s understandable that many will buy the cheaper import.

There’s uneasiness about the portion of our medicine ingredients coming from China and India, though sources don’t agree closely on the amount.

But we never forget the reckless negligence that let COVID out of Wuhan.

With the aforementioned in mind, it’s imperative that American businesses survive and thrive — whether established or brand new. This means more jobs, a stronger economy and a reduced trade deficit.

Two ways to help achieve this are modest corporate income taxes and reasonable energy costs. The former, initiated by Donald Trump in 2017, helped us achieve a 50-year low in unemployment.

All who drive are aware of the price at the pump. Increased diesel fuel prices make truck and train transport more expensive. Increased shipping costs raise prices in stores and restaurants.

The United States became energy independent under Trump. President Joe Biden came in and canceled the Keystone XL pipeline, yet “green lighted” Nord Stream 2 between Russia and Germany. Then, he asked OPEC to increase their production. And he plans to release 50 million gallons of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. This would not have been necessary had he left well enough alone.

Some hurl obscenities at Biden and Kamala Harris. We’ve seen the slogans. I prefer these: “Never surrender energy independence!” “Control the border and finish the wall!” “Demand Foolproof Voter ID!” and “The IRS is big enough!”

Happy holidays.
