Enemies not here at home

Dear Editor,

There’s a saying in German: where two are fighting, a third party profits.

Presently in the United States Democrats and Republicans are constantly fighting, seeking to demonize the other side for their own advantage.

Who is winning? Every enemy of the United States. Who’s losing? We are, the citizens of the United States. Right now President Donald Trump is contesting the results of the 2020 election. He says, without evidence, that he lost because of voter fraud.

But the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has called this recent election “the most secure in American history.” Meanwhile the president-elect, Joe Biden, is trying to go forward with a transition of government without any help from the present president.

No one is minding the store. This is in the midst of a worsening pandemic and Russian provocations off the coast of Alaska. Who is the loser? We are, the people of the United States. Remember: united we are strong; divided we are weak. Let us not give our enemies reason to gloat over our internal divisions.

Eric Smith,

Sugar Grove
