Stereotypes

Editor,

In the Monday, December 2nd edition, the political cartoon featured on page four was not only in bad taste, but projects an unfortunate stereotype that is manifesting in today’s society.

In this cartoon, we see a fat, white, Trump-supporting, gun toating person surrounded by two gay males holding hands, an interracial couple, a Jew, a Muslim and an immigrant, quaking in his shoes, feeling threatened.

The message that is trying to be conveyed through this tasteless image is that everyone needs to be afraid of white males with guns because they are running out of safe places, surrounded by and threatened by every possible person that isn’t like them, implying that this demographic is not only weak-minded, xenophobic, racist, homophobic and Republican but a general threat to society as a whole. This is the message that is being taught in schools, broadcast in the media, and being used by Democrat presidential candidates. It couldn’t be further from the truth. First of all, the image shows the gun packing, MAGA hat-wearing social outcast flamboyantly flaunting his weapons, obviously proud of his firepower, he wants the world to see how “bad” he is. I don’t know of one person that carries who has this mentality. I don’t know one person who carries who would feel threatened in the situation our gun toating, Trump-loving cartoon stereotype finds himself in.

The point of this cartoon is to generate fear and hatred towards good people; people who take their second amendment rights very seriously, in an attempt to eventually generate enough fear and suspicion to eventually get the laws (constitution) changed to fit their idea of utopia. If they succeed, we will be one step closer to tyranny, and that is what truly makes us feel threatened.

Respectfully,

James Matie,

Warren
