Pray and vote

Dear Editor,

For many of us, the upcoming election may be the most critical one in our lifetime.

I’ve heard several people say they don’t want anything to do with “politics”. Others have said, “There are no good choices so why should I vote?”

As a Christian, I think I have an answer for their concerns. Where the candidates may be in question, the platform of the respective parties is not. Every elected Democrat or Republican is committed to defend and support their party’s platform, their basic beliefs in how to govern/change this nation. The platforms are not written by the candidates, but by committees chosen to construct and convey their ideological beliefs.

I was recently challenged to compare the two platforms and was both assured and alarmed at some of the statements I read. I quote from page 18 of the Republican platform: “We pledge to defend religious beliefs and rights of conscience of all Americans and to safeguard religious institutions against government control.” The Democratic platform supports “a progressive vision of religious freedom that respects pluralism”. Other Christian issues delineated in their respective platforms include abortion, marriage, the judicial system and the Constitution. It is our responsibility as Americans, as Christians, to understand who and what we are voting for.

In the past presidential election, over 39 million Christians did not vote. If they had, do you think the outcome might have been different? America’s uniqueness is in large part derived from the ability of the electorate (that’s us) to choose those who govern. I encourage you to prayerfully consider the platforms of the respective parties and choose ye this day whom ye will serve because whoever is elected in November will have the right and privilege to determine how we are governed, to appoint judges and enact laws according to their party philosophy.

The deadline to register or change your registration is October 11th. God has granted to this nation the right of self-governance. Our primary way to do that is through our election process. Please pray for our nation and vote for those who will serve with righteousness, justice and honor.
