Frederick John Burns
Frederick John Burns
Fred, 95, was called to his heavenly home on Oct. 16, 2025 at Tidewell Hospice in Bradenton, Florida. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.
Fred was born July 6, 1930, the youngest of three brothers, in Brookston, Pa to Arthur “Archie” Burns and Gladys Marie (Carlson) Burns. He cherished his childhood and youth in Brookston where he fished and trapped along the South Branch of the Tionesta and the runs that fed it, hunted with his loyal dog Tuffy, and became a master of the whitetail, not for trophy but sustenance. He miraculously survived a hunter’s stray bullet at age 11 which contributed to his always being cautious, vigilant, and protective much to the later benefit of family and fellow workers.
He attended a one-room schoolhouse in Brookston through the 8th grade and then graduated from Sheffield High School in 1948. It was there he first laid eyes on his future bride, Lewelyn (Lou) Williamson whom he married on Sept. 22, 1950. They recently celebrated 75 years of marriage together!
Fred was a superior athlete, playing basketball in high school and baseball for the Ludlow Wildcats at age 19. In his 40’s, he revisited the diamond playing softball in the Warren Rec League, where despite age, often led the league in home runs.
He remodeled and added on to his childhood home at the age of 16. He then built two beautiful homes in Sheffield and Tiona from the footer to the last shingle for his growing family. He could build, repair, and fabricate anything needed at home or on the job.
He worked for 15 years at Anderson Bakery in Warren, Pa and then 20 years for National Fuel Gas in Ludlow, Pa. His hard work and frugal lifestyle allowed him to be debt free at age 33, become “cash only” for the remainder of his life, and retire at age 55. He and Lou then moved to Bradenton, Florida to be near family. He purchased a used motor home, which he soon and appropriately named “Patch”, and he and Lou set out for many years of travel during the summer months. Their annual trips took them to all 50 states, Canada, and even a trip up the Alcan Highway. Together, they treasured the many National and State Parks they visited.
His homes were often filled with family, friends, and travelers. All were welcomed to enjoy great food, comfort, and especially laughter. His wit, storytelling, and memory had no equal. He truly was an uncommon common man, not of community or crowds, but of family and friends.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Warren and Bethel Baptist Church in Bradenton. Fred lived his faith each day portraying fairness, integrity, and kindness to all he met. His finest hour was the five years of devoted and loving care he provided Lou as she progressively battled dementia.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Wendell and his wife Betty; brother-in-law, Rev. Charles Williamson; sister-in-law, Mary Burns; and son-in-law, Stanley Swartz.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Lewelyn ( Lou) Burns; brother Larry Burns, sister-in-law Edna Williamson; his children, Susan Swartz, Craig (Mary) Burns, Karen (Jim) Olsen of Bradenton, Fl, and Wendy (Dan) Mead of State College, Pa. He also leaves his much loved eight grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family with great appreciation thanks the staff at Discovery Village at Sarasota Bay, Tidewell Hospice, and his last friend, Harold.
“Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.” James 1:12
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Memorials or donations may be sent to
