Gordon W. Fitzgerald, 89, of Youngsville, PA, passed away Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025, at the Rouse Warren County Home, in Youngsville, after an extended illness.
Gordon was born on June 12, 1935 in Warren, PA, to the late Cecil S. and Delia Rapp Fitzgerald. After high school, Gordon went on to Penn State Behrend College to become a Design Draftsman, which led to a career at the National Forge in Irvine, retiring after 43 years. He served in the United States Army from 1958-1960 earning a Good Conduct Medal and the Sharpshooter Badge. Gordon was an avid sportsman enthusiast. In his youth he competed at the state level, excelling in track and field, football, and as a member of the Hot Stove League. He won numerous trophies as a trap shooter and enjoyed hunting small game and deer. He was known throughout Youngsville for his daily mile long walks with his favorite collie dog by his side. Gordon attended the Youngsville Free Methodist Church and Sugar Grove Mission Covenant Church where he served for many years as a greeter and usher. His faith was a very important part of his life.
A special thank-you from the family to the staff at the Rouse Home for their patience and kindness as they cared for Gordon, and the compassion they showed to his family. Also a special thank you to his niece, Kelly Gustafson, who was a devoted part of his caregiving in his final years.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, whom he married on July 14, 1990 in Sugar Grove; his children, Cheryl (Paul) Occhuizzo of Warren, Bonnie (John) Mayes of Erie, PA, Jennifer (Chrissy Allen) Fitzgerald, Lampasas, TX, and Michael (Marcy) Butterfield of Newburgh, IN; a sister, Jacqueline (Lawrence) Gustafson of Irvine, PA; his grandchildren, Chelsea, Cody and Adam Jackman, Ethan Mayes, Ava and Addison Butterfield, along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a twin brother at birth and his sister, Anita Avey.
A memorial service will he announced at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made in Gordon’s name to the DAV Warren Voluntary Driver Association, 210 North Drive, Room 109, Warren, PA 16365.
