Dr. Thomas K. Barratt

Dr. Thomas K. Barratt, age 96, of Meadville, PA passed away at his home on Saturday August 10, 2024. He was born on September 11, 1927 in Wilcox, PA to the late Dr. Stanley and Margaret (Keating) Barratt. He married Joan C. Anderson of Kane, PA on December 23, 1950. She survives.

Dr. Barratt graduated from Wilcox High School. He earned his B.S. at Clarion University of PA and his M.Ed. and Ed.D at Pennsylvania State University. He was a school teacher, administrator and a college professor for 38 years in PA. He started his career as a teacher in Coalport, PA then worked as a teacher and administrator in Warren, PA, a supervising principal in Sheffield, PA and eventually the Superintendent for Warren County School District. He then was a professor at Edinboro State College, an Assistant Superintendent of Gateway School District in Monroeville, PA, the Superintendent of Crawford Central School District (1975- 1986) of Meadville, PA and the Dean/ Administrator of Alliance College of Cambridge Springs, PA.

Dr. Barratt then moved to Arizona for a time and worked until his retirement as a partner in Computer Based Superior of Sun City, AZ and as an Adjunct Professor at Central AZ College in Apache Junction, AZ.

He was a member of the Rotary Club of Sheffield, Edinboro and Meadville. He was on the Board of Directors at both Sheffield and Meadville Libraries. He was a life member of the PA Association of School Administrators and of the National Education Association. Dr. Barratt was President of the PA Association of School Administrators in 1984-85. He was also a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Masons.

In addition to his wife of seventy-four (74) years, he is survived by a son, Thomas Whitford Barratt (Wife-Sarah) of Lost Creek, WV and a daughter, Jennifer L. Alonso of Meadville, PA; four grandchildren, Joshua Thomas Alonso of Meadville, PA, Erinn Barratt of Lost Creek, WV, Carrie Joe Rhoades of West Milford,WV and Lauren Spicer of West Milford, WV; and five great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include nieces and a nephew: Clythera S. Hornung of S. Marys, PA, Rebecca A. Martinson of Meridian, ID and Christopher B. Smith of Wilcox, PA.

Dr. Barratt was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters: Virginia B. Smith and Rachel Barratt.

There will be an opportunity to offer condolences to Dr. Barratt’s family on Saturday August 17, 2024 beginning at 10:30 AM at First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty St., Meadville, PA. A memorial service will be held beginning at 11:30 AM at the First Presbyterian Church, with Reverend Doctor Daniel Corll officiating.

Memorial contributions can be made in Dr. Barratt’s name to First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty St., Meadville, PA 16335.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the First Presbyterian Church.
