Diane Clara Underwood

Diane Clara Underwood
It was one year ago that we lost our wonderful Diane Clara Underwood RN (nee Johnston) to the scourge of cancer. And the emptiness we feel today is a void that we still find extremely difficult to fill.
Diane was a light that is missed more and more by family and friends in both Canada and the United States. Indeed, how Diane came to live and work in her home of Warren, Pennsylvania, was by a circuitous route.
Born on November 6, 1950, in Englehart, Ontario, Diane spent most her childhood growing up in the small mining town of Schefferville, Quebec, in Canada’s subarctic. From there, on graduating from high school, she chose to follow in her older sister Helen’s footsteps and train to become a nurse.
Diane graduated from St. Joseph’s School of nursing in Hamilton, Ontario, on September 3, 1971, where she worked briefly. Providence, however, was about to change her life. On a vacation to Florida, Diane met her soul mate Darrell Underwood. They were married August 17, 1975, in Buffalo, New York, and chose to make Daytona Beach, Florida, their home. Diane eventually got her American Green Card and on April 25th, 1983, she received her certificate to practice nursing in Florida. From the Sunshine State, Diane’s nursing career spanned a total of 44 years, including: Hamilton, Ontario, Daytona Beach, Florida; Mackenzie, British Columbia; and, finally settling and working at the hospital in Warren where she retired in 2015.
Looking back, Diane’s chosen profession of nursing was a natural for her. As an inherent nurturer, Diane always liked to help people. When family members were in need, Diane was there for them. When friends were in need, Diane was there for them. And, when her patients in the Warren Hospital were in need, Diane was there for them.
Finally, according to the many nurses Diane knew or helped to train over the years, when they needed instruction, help or comfort, Diane was always there for them too.
Diane leaves behind her three sisters, Helen, Marion and Carol, and her brother Ted, as well as a large family of in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews as well as a contingent of very dear friends.
Today, Diane’s family wishes to acknowledge and thank Warren Hospice for its excellent end-of-life care. And, to express heartfelt thanks to Diane’s nursing sisters and an amazing brother nurse who joined her to show their love and support for their colleague and friend and bring her comfort and loving care during her final days.
We miss you Diane and you will be forever in our hearts.
