Phillip A. Wingard

Phillip A. “Bubby” Wingard, 91, of 353 Benzinger Road, St. Marys, passed away at his home on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, following a short illness.

He was born on Feb. 6, 1933 in Ridgway, a son of the late Earl and Alma Hidinger Wingard.

On Oct. 8, 1955, at the St. Marys Catholic Church, he married the late Phyllis Anna Wolfe, who preceded him in death on March 21, 2014, having shared more than 58 years of marriage.

Phillip grew up in Hallton and attended high school in Ridgway. He was a faithful member of the St. Marys Catholic Church. On October 4, 1949, he enlisted in the Pennsylvania National Guard. When the Korean War broke out, his National Guard unit was activated into Federal Army service, and he was stationed in Indiana and Germany. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant on October 3, 1952. He was a member of the American Legion. He ran the Wolfe & Wingard Texaco Service Station at one time, and retired from Airco Speer Carbon Company after more than 30 years of service.

Throughout their 58 years of marriage, Phillip and Phyllis enjoyed traveling. He enjoyed his tree farm, and enjoyed monitoring the growth of his trees. He loved going to camp and spending time outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. In his retirement years, he enjoyed spending time at the Kersey Senior Center, and rarely missed a Nascar race or an episode of the Price is Right. His favorite hobby during retirement was scrapping and recycling metal, always on the hunt for a good piece of copper. Most of all, he loved visits from his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by seven sons: Stephen (Mary) Wingard of St. Marys, Donald (Cindy) Wingard of Marion Center, William ( Tammy) Wingard of St. Marys, Edward (Julie) Wingard of Powell, Ohio, Larry (Jean) Wingard of St. Marys, George (Martha) Wingard of St. Marys, and Joseph (Mary Jane) Wingard of St. Marys, and by two daughters: Mary Ann (Dennis) Bush of St. Marys, and Marguerite (Jason) Hanes of St. Marys; and by his 31 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way, and by a son-in-law James Moore of Emporium. He is also survived by two brothers: Reynolds Wingard, and Russell Wingard, both of Warren, and by two sisters-in-law; Karen Wingard of Warren, and Patricia Wolfe of St. Marys, and by numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Phillip was preceded in death by a daughter; Rose Moore, and by a great-granddaughter; Thea Wingard.
