Paul D. Waid

Paul D. Waid, 75, of Gouldtown, PA, passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 unexpectedly at home.

He was born on February 24, 1949, a son of the late Gordon and Olive Martin Waid.

He was a 1967 graduate of Frewsburg High School. While in high school he lived with his grandmother, Ruth Martin, and worked as a part time stock boy in the former Quality Markets, Frewsburg.

After graduation he served in the United States Navy. While stateside he performed with the Navy Band at various ceremonies across the country. Overseas he served on the USS Independence as a member of the flight crew launching airplanes over the Mediterranean Sea.

Upon discharge, he returned home and worked his way up the management levels at Quality Markets. He left the grocery business after 32 years and began employment at the former Zahm & Matson. He served as store manager at both their North Collins and Springville locations. He reached a million-dollar sales volume several different years and was always proud of selling John Deere equipment.

He was active in the boy scouting program serving as Cubmaster of Troop 14 in Russell. He received the “District Award of Merit” from the Chief Cornplanter Council. He was instrumental in the construction of the wooden playground at the Russell Elementary School in the late 1980’s. With great pride, he enjoyed attending the many performances of the Eisenhower Knights Marching Band of which his children were members.

In his spare time, he cleaned and repaired grocery carts and rebuilt and painted tractors in his garage. In the winter he loved to snowmobile across the fields in Gouldtown. He enjoyed making and distributing fruit baskets to his friends and neighbors at Christmas time.

Paul is survived by his wife, Rebecca L. Elmore Waid, who he married August 14, 1971; his children: Michael (Jennifer) Waid, Jason (Chelsea) Waid, Pamela (Daniel) Hanson; grandchildren: Avery, Alexis, Kelsea, Nathan, Alison, Abigail; three brothers Bruce Waid, Gordon Waid, Scott (Becky) Vennard; and a sister-in-law Linda (Chris) VanDyke.
