Kathrine Rosalie Dunkle Heath
Kathrine Rosalie Dunkle Heath passed away on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at the Rouse Home in Youngsville, Pennsylvania. She was 90 years old. Katy was born February 18, 1933, on her grandfather’s farm in Accord, Ulster County, New York.
When she was about 3 years old her family packed up and moved to a farm in Freehold Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania. The whole family worked together to make the farm a success, and they helped many friends and extended family to have enough food during the Depression. After attending a small schoolhouse in Wrightsville, the children transferred to Youngsville High School where Katy would live with her grandparents in town during the week and help on the farm on weekends. Katy had a strong sense of humor and a lively wit that attracted people to her during high school, college, and her later life.
Katy graduated from Youngsville High School. She received her bachelor’s degree from Allegheny College in Meadville, PA, and received her master’s degree and RN from the University of Pittsburgh. Katy was a remarkable nurse with natural warmth and skill, and she worked in several hospitals in the area. She continued her career working for Penn State University, particularly focusing on nursing education–developing continuing education and distance education programs for nurses.
In the middle of her career, she resigned from Penn State to focus on caring for her family and the special health needs first of her mother and then of her sister Cordelia. She spent the rest of her life living on the farm and helping those around her.
Katy was preceded in death by her father and mother, Harry Williams Dunkle and Caroline Cole Christiana Dunkle, and her siblings, Michael Webster Dunkle, Cordelia Christiana Dunkle Sowa, and David Leroy Dunkle.
