Barbara Melquist Hartenstein

Barbara Melquist Hartenstein passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023, at her home in Evans, GA

Barbara was born in Jamestown, NY on Feb. 9. 1934, the youngest child of Dorald G. and Mildred Colby Melquist. She was a graduate of Jamestown High School. She soon began her first job at the Jamestown Bus Company. Once she met the love of her life, Richard O. Hartenstein, they were devoted to each other. The couple married on April 4, 1954, at Kidder Memorial Church in Jamestown. They built a new home and moved to Warren, PA in 1956.

Barbara was a devoted stay-at- home mom to their three children, Linda, Bill, and Fred until their teenage years. After moving to Russell, PA, she began working as a bookkeeper for Blueberry Golf Course. She also served as Elk Township secretary.

The family enjoyed many years of camping and traveling all over the country. She was a very capable woman and accomplished in many things. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, playing cards, puzzles, traveling, and driving fast! Barbara and Richard always had a home improvement project going. She could hang wallpaper, lay tile, wire electrical outlets, and tackle any other task that came along.

Barbara is proceeded in death by her beloved husband, Richard as well as her siblings Rachel Mulle, Helen Barron and Dorald (Bud) Melquist. She is survived by her children Linda Scalise (Frank), R. William Hartenstein (Jody Swartz), and Fred Hartenstein (Kim). Surviving grandchildren are Joe Scalise (Kara), Craig Hartenstein (Viola), Scott Hartenstein (Sarah) and Amanda Scalise (Michael Johnson). She also leaves behind six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

At Barbara’s request, no funeral services will be held. A Celebration of her Life will be held in the spring in Warren, PA at the convenience of the family.
