Curtis L. Sorensen

Curtis L. Sorensen, of Ellwood City, PA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at the home of his daughter and son-in law where he has resided for the last 4 years. Curtis was born on September 18, 1929, in Warren, PA, the son of the late Henry and Rosella (Anderson) Sorensen.

Curtis graduated from Warren Area High School in 1948. He began his career at Hammond Iron Works/Pittsburgh DesMoines as a machinist alongside his father, and later moved up to a position in engineering. While working as a machinist, he was blinded in his right eye when a piece of steel flew off the grinder. That didn’t seem to discourage him as he started his own contracting business. As time went by, his brother joined in this venture with him as Curtis L. & Dennis C. Sorensen Contracting and continued until his retirement. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and digging bottles. Fourteen years ago, he lost the sight in his left eye and dealt with cancer overcoming both, learning how to live on his own with his blindness. He was a kind and gracious man who overcame many difficulties, persevering with his faith and love of Our Lord. Curtis is a member of St. James Roman Catholic Church in Pittsburgh, PA.

Curtis is survived by his two daughters, Sharon (Ronald) Sudano, of Ellwood City, PA and Susan Jerman, of Pittsburgh, PA, a daughter-in-law, Susan Sorensen, of Warren, PA, a brother, Denny (Dawn) Sorensen, of Warren, PA, 3 sisters, Gladys Still, Joan (Stanley) Phelps and Julie (Robert) Mahan, all of Warren, PA, 7 Grandchildren, Timothy Stimmell, Michael Stimmell, Jeremy Bennett, Holly Penefsky, Matthew Bennett, Jennifer Rogers and James Sorensen, 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces & nephews.

In addition to his parents, Curtis was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Sorensen, his son, Robert C. Sorensen, a brother, Leroy Sorensen and two sisters, Rose Ann Hennessy and Emily Tuller.
