Shirley M. Thorpe, 94, of 2000 Southwestern Drive, Jamestown, N.Y., formerly of Sumter, S..C and Busti, N.Y., passed away on Aug. 19, 2022, in UPMC Chautauqua.
She was born July 27, 1928, in Jamestown, N.Y., a daughter of the late Archie and Grace Sumner Lane.
Shirley spent the last 25 years living in Sumter, S.C., moving back to Jamestown, a few months ago to be closer to her family. While in South Carolina she was a member of the Church of God and in earlier years was a volunteer at the Tuomey Hospital in Sumter, S.C.
She will be remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved to go shopping, go to garage sales, and spent time sewing and keeping very active.
Surviving are two daughters: Karen (James) Ecker and Nancy (David) Pratt, both of Sugar Grove, Pa.; a grandson, Jeffrey (Boukje) Canaan of The Netherlands; three great-grandchildren: Loren, Layton, and Celeste Canaan, all of the Netherlands; a brother, Richard (Janice) Lane of Sumter, S.C.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leighton R. “Lates” Thorpe, whom she married July 26, 1946, and who died April 30, 1991; and a brother, Quentin T. Lane, and his wife, Susan Lane.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2022, in the Lind Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in the Wesleyan Cemetery, Sugar Grove, Pa. The family will receive friends from 11:00 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, and one half-hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
