James Calvin Stevenson

James Calvin Stevenson
James Calvin Stevenson, 89, of Melbourne, FL passed away unexpectedly on June 30th, 2022. Born April 28, 1933, in Jamestown, N.Y., to Floyd “Steve” Stevenson and Beatrice Birchard Stevenson.
Jim was a 1951 graduate of Warren Area High School and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, circumnavigating the globe aboard the USS Heermann, DD 532, 1953-57.
Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman from the earliest days, and a birder and photographer always. Somewhere along the line he became a conservationist too, with sea turtles becoming a particular passion.
In later years, Jim could be found scouring the beaches in his adopted state of Florida, volunteering with the University of Central Florida Marine Turtle Research Group and scouting with the Sea Turtle Conservancy. For thirty years he and teams of volunteers, students and researchers counted, mapped and tagged sea turtles along the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge in one of the great conservation success stories of our times.
Closer to home, and by those who knew him best, Jim will be missed for his seemingly boundless energy, his enthusiasm and inquisitiveness. His steady hand at the tiller will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his children: Kim Stevenson, Leslie Pridgen and Kevin Stevenson; grandchildren: Caroline and James Pridgen; and his brother, William “Bill” Stevenson (Joann).
