Nancy Louise Agerter

Nancy Louise Agerter, 93, most recently of Oakland, Calif., passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 10, 2021. She died the day after Mother’s Day, which she celebrated joyfully with visits and phone calls from her daughters and grandchildren.

She was born to the late Robert and Grace West, Aug. 19, 1927, in Pittsburgh, Pa. She was the eldest of three daughters and is survived by her sister, Barbara Simms of Pittsburgh.

Nancy was predeceased by her sister, Patricia Marquis in 1994. Nancy earned bachelors and maste’s degrees in education from the University of Pittsburgh.

She married the late George W. Agerter Jr. in 1951 and lived in Ingomar, Pa., for 26 years before retiring to Scandia, Pa., in 1977. Nancy lived in Scandia at Maplecroft farm until 2017, when she relocated to Oakland, Caliif., near her daughter, Linda, and her family.

She is survived by three daughters: Linda Agerter and husband, Richard Judd of Berkeley, Calif., Cory Agerter of Tucson, Ariz., and Jodi Stearns and husband, Timothy Stearns of Greenfield Twp, PA. She is also survived by five grandchildren: David, Samuel, Wesley, Brooke, and Silas; and one great- grandchild, Rani. Nancy’s husband, George died in 1998.

Nancy taught preschool and elementary school in her younger years near Pittsburgh, Pa. She stayed active after retirement through endless hours of volunteer work. She was an active member of the Scandia Volunteer Fire Depar-ment Auxiliary for many years and was awarded the Person of Year Award in 1993. Nancy was secretary to the Covenant Women’s organization of the Scandia Covenant Church for over a decade. Nancy was a member of the Committee to Save Scandia School and she served on the board of the Elk Township Historical Society when it formed in 2003 until she moved to California. She was also treasurer for the Elk Township Historical Society for several years.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held later this summer in Scandia, Pa.
