Lois Halcyon Sartwell Mueller
Lois Halcyon Sartwell Mueller, 100, completed her life’s journey on Friday, November 6, 2020. She was born Thursday, April 22, 1920 at Ellwood City, Pa., to the late John Day and Lois Sara Schaffner Sartwell.
Halcyon graduated from Lincoln High School, Ell-wood City, Pa., in 1938. Following graduation from high school, she attended Duffs-Iron City Business College in Pittsburgh and completed the secretarial course in 1943. From 1943 to 1949, Halcyon worked for Rockwell Manufactur-ing Company in Pittsburgh, where she worked as a clerk in the advertising department and edited the company’s employee magazine. From 1949 to 1950, she worked for the American Baptist Publica-tion Society in Philadel-phia, Pa., as a secretary and editorial assistant. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at Geneva College, Beaver Falls in 1953 and a Master of education degree with a major in student per-sonnel administration at Syracuse University in 1956. During the summers of 1954 and 1955, Hal-cyon spent her time being the residence hostess for the YWCA Hospitality House at Chautauqua, New York. In 1956, she was hired as Dean of Women at Moravi-an College in Bethlehem, Pa., and in 1956, she was hired as Dean of Women at Geneva College, Beaver Falls, Pa.
In 1958, Halcyon served as a tour leader for eight international students ar-ranged by the Association for World Travel Ex-change, driving a station wagon from New York to California and returning to New York, 8,400 miles.
Her quest for lifelong learning included com-pleting requirements for membership in Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Cir-cle in 1960. Also, she was a member of the Guild of Seven Seals at Chautauqua, New York. Other organiza-tions included Mercer County Historical Society-life member and former member of the board of directors and edit-ed the society’s newspaper for ten years. She was also a member of the Romanen-ko Chamber Players of the Mercer County Historical Society and was assistant to the administrator for ten years. In June 1992, Hal-cyon was named Director Emerita for service to the society and the chamber players ensemble. She was also a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star, Greenville Chapter #63 (past Matron, 1985), member of Thiel Women’s Club, former chairman of the Books of Flowers pro-ject, member American Le-gion Auxiliary, Greenville and the Mina-Findley Lake Historical Society.
She and Dr. Paul Eugene Mueller were married on December 21, 1963. He preceded her in death on November 22, 1997. The couple moved to Green-ville, Pa., where Halcyon was employed as a staff writer at Record-Argus.
She and her husband moved to Findley Lake, New York in 1992 and be-came active members of the community. She was editor of Tapestry newsletter from 1998 until she felt too chal-lenged to achieve her per-sonal satisfaction with the job.
She and her husband traveled widely in the Un-ited States, including the Pacific Northwest and Alas-ka. They traveled to Europe seven times, including as-sisting her husband on three January interim trips with Thiel College students, and to Mexico and Canada. They participated in a Luth-eran Church in America seminar to Japan in 1976 which included visits to Hong Kong and Taiwan and in a 1973 Homeric So-ciety seminar to Greece and several islands, plus Tur-key.
Halcyon was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dr. Paul Eugene Mueller in 1997; her sister, Anne Sartwell Gould in 2002; and a brother-in-law, Dr. George C. Gould in 1995.
She is survived by nephews, George S. Gould (Darlene), Dr. Timothy C. Gould; and niece, Stephanie Gould Walls (Edward); grandnieces, Sta-cie Ann Gould Martin (Josh), Laura Anne Walls Edwards (Robert); Ashley Marie Gould Miller and Hannah Jean Walls Maney.
She is also survived by great grandnephews, James Miller and George Cox; and great grandnieces, Ava Martin, Alivia Martin, Isa-belle Cox and Margaret (Maggie) Edwards.
Family and friends may attend a graveside service on Tuesday at 4 pm., at Pine Grove Cemetery, Cor-ry, Pa. Rev. Brian Eiss will officiate.
The family suggests memorials be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 1500 Freeport Road, North East, PA. 16428 or to a charity of one’s choice.
