Mildred Withington

Mildred M. “Millie” Withington, 90, of Youngsville, Pa., passed away Thursday morning, June 22, 2017 at the Rouse Home.

She was born October 4, 1926, in Kane, Pa., a daughter to the late Harvey Wallace and Edna (Olson) Withington. Millie first started at WCA Hospital in Jamestown, N.Y., in September 1944 as a student of WCA’s School of Nursing. She joined the WCA staff in 1947 and retired there after 37 years of service in January 1982. As part of her training program, she studied medical and pediatric nursing at Belleview Hospital in New York City, infectious diseases at Kingston Avenue Hospital in Brooklyn and psychiatric nursing at Gowanda State Hospital. Millie received further training at Children’s Hospital in Boston Mass., and advanced nursing courses at the University of Buffalo.

As her responsibilities grew, she continued to be promoted to the Director of Inservice Education and then to Nursing Supervisor. In 1960 she was appointed Assistant Director of Nursing Service and in 1964 she became the Director of Nursing Service.

Millie was promoted to Assistant Administrator and Director of Nursing Service in 1974 and in 1980 her responsibilities as Assistant Administrator took so much of her time her position became solely that of Assistant Administrator. She also was fundamental in bringing Hospice to Southwestern New York and was a volunteer coordinator. Millie was a caretaker to many relatives and friends and enjoyed golfing, bowling and was involved in numerous church activities, as she was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Youngsville, Pa.

She is survived by her siblings, John (Elizabeth Bathurst) Withington of Titusville, Fl., Helen Larson of Kane, Pa., Mary Merenick of Jamestown, N.Y., Ruth (Burtis) Hallberg of Frewsburg, N.Y. and Roy (Sandra Galbraith) Withington of Youngsville, Pa., and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Millie was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Withington, 2 sistersinlaw, Susan Johnson Withington and Shirley Withington and 2 brothersinlaw, Robert Larson and David Merenick.

Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday, June 25 at the Nelson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 314 North Main Street, Youngsville, Pa., 16371 from 2 to 3 p.m., at which time a funeral service will be held there with the Rev. Rick Nelson, pastor of the First United Methodist and Evangelical United Methodist Churches in Youngsville, officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, in Kane, at the convenience of the family.
