Charles Meier

Charles William Meier, 87, of Kerney Road, Tidioute, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at St. Vincent Hospital, Erie, PA. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, on June 14, 1929, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Marcella (Elter) Meier. After he graduated from high school in June of 1947, he entered the U. S. Army and attended the Military Police Training School in Berlin Germany and the European Command Intelligence School in Oberammergau Germany. He served as an MP at “Checkpoint Charlie” in Berlin and Helmstadt. Charles then attended Connelly Trade School in Pittsburgh and was certified as a millwright, electrician and carpenter. He worked in construction, had owned and operated his own egg and poultry business, and retired from Loranger International. He was a member of the New London Grange for many years and also the Tidioute Presbyterian Church where he was very active in different capacities and served as an elder. He was the husband of Renate D. (Burdinski) Meier whom he married in Germany in Bochum Oct. 16, 1950 who survives him. Also surviving are 2 daughters, Lorraine (Jim) Jones of Warren, PA and Claudia (James) Spargo of Warren, PA; 1 Brother, Robert Meier of Pittsburgh, PA; a sister, Elizabeth Myshin of Florida; a sisterinlaw, Karin Peyer of Zurich, Switzerland; 6 grandchildren, Shawn P. Jones, Joshua J. Spargo, Jacob A. Spargo, Tina M. Jones Terry, Maria Spargo Huss, and Jill Spargo Dale; 8 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin sons, Charles A. Meier II and Mark F. Meier; a grandaughter, Melissa L. Jones; his inlaws, Friedrich and Maria Burdinski; and a sister, Virginia Mykicz. A time of visitation will take place on Saturday, March 25th from 12 1 pm at the Presbyterian Church in Tidioute where a funeral service will follow at 1 pm with Rev. Ralph Culp officiating.
