Kinzua Heritage Folk School plans Saturday lesson

By Jessica N. Rex 2 min read
The Kinzua Heritage Folk School will have its first workshop on Saturday. Blacksmithing is one of several course offerings available.

The organizers of the Kinzua Heritage Festival have offered artisan and skills workshops to the public at various venues over the years. With improvements and the addition of a new building to the grounds, the group is now ready and able to offer these workshops and more, in one central location on their grounds.

The inaugural workshop event to kick off this new folk school will take place on Saturday.

The goal is to build a living, breathing center for traditional arts in the Kinzua region -- one where artisans, musicians, storytellers, and students can gather to learn, create, and carry forward the cultural traditions that shaped local communities. Instructors possess the ability to blend skilled craftsmanship with storytelling, historical context, and hands-on learning for this new regional initiative.

Participants may sign up for two workshops, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Lunch is included. The pre-registration fee is $45; with a limited number of walk-ins that may be accepted. The minimum attendee age is 12. Children ages 12 to 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The event is rain or shine. Some workshops could be partially outdoors, dress accordingly. Early registrations are encouraged due to limited class sizes.

The Kinzua Heritage Festival grounds is located at 4047 Fox Hill Road where the day begins at 9 a.m. The morning worship session will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon, with an hour for a provided lunch. The afternoon workshop session will run from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Workshop topics include wire wrap/weaving, blacksmithing for beginners, Iroquois style beading, basket weaving, ply split braiding, and fall garden prep.
