Several locations around the county celebrated the inaugural Dolly Parton Day on Sept. 25, a day honoring the country music legend in a nod to her smash hit song and movie "9 to 5."
Dolly Parton has inspired generations through her unwavering commitment to literacy, education, kindness, and helping individuals reach their full potential. Driven by a deep belief in creating opportunities for everyone, the cultural icon's legacy continues to thrive through both her timeless music and her transformative global literacy program, the Imagination Library.
Children of Warren County have been benefiting from that program for the past six years.
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library continues to be an important initiative for the Jefferson DeFrees Family Center program and for the community. In July 2018 the first 15 books were mailed out. That number has grown exponentially, currently mailing approximately 800 books per month to children in Warren County who are under the age of 5 years. In six years, that number is now totaling over 76,000 books.
"It is all made possible by generous people within our community," said coordinator Jennifer Madigan.
The Jefferson DeFrees Family Center receives a monthly invoice for the books received by Warren County Families. A donation of $32 will sponsor one child for one year.
"We are grateful for everyone that supports the program. We have had 1,707 kids graduate from the program," Madigan added. "Continuing the program is our way of helping make sure Dolly’s light and love lives on."
More information on making donations or registering a child under 5 years of age can be found at imaginationlibrary.com or by calling the Jefferson DeFrees Family Center at 814-723-6350.
