In its 16th year, the Coats for Kids program ran through the Tiona Global Methodist Church has successfully helped children in the Sheffield attendance area with winter wear.
This Saturday, 51 children will be given what they need to stay warm throughout the cold winter months including gloves, mittens, hats and scarves-many of which are handmade by church members and friends. Each pre-registered request given is for specific sizes and the ladies make it their mission to purchase the necessary items.
A large recent donation toward the endeavor was received and appreciated. The Allegheny Valley Veterans Center in Clarendon has been both the storage location as well as the event itself. Group officials said they are thankful for the center's ongoing assistance with it over the years.
Jim Houghtling, volunteer, said that growing up getting coats passed down to him from more than one former owner to him does his heart good to know that these kids have brand new coats.
"God placed this ministry on the hearts of those in our congregation and it is our pleasure to serve Him by helping out these little ones," Houghtling said.
