The City of Warren is asking residents and the public to help choose a name for its planned Downtown Riverfront Redevelopment project.
A naming survey has been developed as part of the city’s ongoing effort to gather public input on the project, which is designed to improve access to the Allegheny River and create new recreational and pedestrian amenities along Warren’s downtown riverfront.
Participants may submit their own name suggestion or select up to three names from a list developed by the project’s steering committee. Proposed names include Allegheny Landing, Allegheny Riverfront Park, Allegheny Riverwalk, Confluence Park, Gateway to Allegheny, Lumber Heritage Gateway, Mill Race Landing, Riverfront Park, The Wharf, Warren at the Allegheny and Warren Riverwalk, among others.
The redevelopment is planned in phases.
The first phase would include construction of a new boat ramp providing access for small craft, canoes and kayaks, along with a stairway and floating dock to improve access for boaters and pedestrians. Engineering for that portion of the project is nearly complete, and the city has obtained the necessary regulatory permits. Construction bidding will depend on securing the required funding.
The second phase would focus on the area known as Breezepoint Landing. Plans call for potentially removing the existing gazebo and restroom to make room for a more user-friendly restroom and additional amenities intended to complement the boat ramp and dock and encourage greater activity in the downtown area.
A third phase would extend the existing riverfront walking pathway eastward, creating additional opportunities for pedestrians and recreational users.
The fourth phase would focus on development of city-owned property near the eastern end of the Transit Authority of Warren County facility.
A public outreach meeting was held Sept. 10 at the riverfront project site. Mayor David Wortman and members of the project steering committee presented architectural plans, renderings and proposed funding for the various phases of the redevelopment.
During the meeting, the committee also introduced the proposed names and encouraged members of the public to participate in the naming process.
The naming survey gives residents an opportunity to help establish the identity of what is envisioned as a new recreational and gathering area along Warren’s Allegheny River waterfront.
Survey participants can submit a custom name or select up to three names from the city’s list of proposed options. The survey results will be considered as the city continues development of the riverfront project.
