Chicago's Butter Chicken Brass Band was brought to Warren's Struthers Library Theatre recently to perform for area middle school students.

Students from Eisenhower, Sheffield, Youngsville, Tidioute Community Charter and St. Joseph Catholic schools along with local homeschool and cyber school families.

The band's name serves as a culinary metaphor for the group's cross-culture music fusion. Viewing the band as a recipe, where each ingredient blends into something harmonious and rich, the Butter Chicken Brass Band is a Chicago-based musical ensemble that blends the musical sounds across several disciplines to explore South Asian music, a baraat band, and a New Orleans-style brass band.

Co-founded by Catie Hickey (trombone, arranger) and Akshat Jain (Sousaphone and manager), the group is a collaboratively led band featuring Kabir Dalawari (Dhol), Kyle Brooks (saxophones) and Constantine Alexander (trumpet). Butter Chicken Brass Band regularly works with a rotating cast of in-demand players from the Chicago area.

Warren County Summer Music School's Michelle Belleau-Peterson, registrar and financial secretary shared that the unique musicians were very well received.

"The students loved it. We've had incredible feedback," she said.

While the summer music school sponsors the event, it is supported by the Struthers Library Theatre and the Community Foundation of Warren County. Part of the music school's mission is to encourage and develop appreciation for the arts.

"We are so grateful to be surrounded by a community that helps us achieve these goals," Belleau-Peterson said.
