The Allegheny National Forest is planning a 38-acre prescribed burn near Buckaloons Recreation Area later this fall to help reduce wildfire risks and protect nearby communities, infrastructure and natural resources.
The operation is scheduled for late October through early November, pending required approvals and favorable weather conditions. The burn area is located near National Forge Road.
Forest officials said prescribed fires are used to reduce the buildup of overgrown vegetation that can fuel wildfires.
Portions of the area may be closed to the public for several days to ensure safety. Visitors are urged to watch for warning signs along roads near the burn site before and during the operation.
Officials will evaluate weather conditions in the hours leading up to the planned burn. If conditions are not suitable, the prescribed fire may be canceled.
Residents in the surrounding area may experience smoke during the operation. Drivers who encounter smoke on roadways are advised to slow down and turn on their headlights.
The Allegheny National Forest will share updates through its website, social media channels and InciWeb, the interagency incident information system. County emergency management officials will also be notified when burning begins.
Officials encourage residents and visitors to monitor these sources for updates on the prescribed burn and any temporary public access restrictions.
