If you need a reminder that kindness still exists, take part in the U.S.-Canada Friendship Walk today, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. from Crescent Park-Four Flags Park.
Participants will walk across the Hickory Street Bridge (Veterans Bridge) to Pennsylvania Avenue then to Second Avenue and Liberty Street to Struthers Library Theatre, in time for the opening night of “Come From Away.”
Organizer of the walk, Tim Salapek, who worked for a Canadian firm in the U.S., explained how he thought it would be great to get people together to say "U.S. and Canada are friends."
Based on the true story of the time when the isolated community of Gander, Newfoundland, played host to the world, "Come From Away" is a musical that shares the stories of over 7,000 people from 38 planes diverted to Gander on Sept. 11.
Writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein connected with Gander residents and former passengers and recorded their memories and emotions to produce an authentic narrative by condensing hours of interviews into the 100-minute show.
The musical demonstrates how the stranded passengers were cared for like family and how kindness and music can unite people, offer comfort, and inspire hope in difficult times.
