Allegheny River Cleanup seeking volunteers for September events

The Allegheny River Cleanup Crew will hold its 18th annual river cleanup this month, offering several opportunities for volunteers to help remove debris and protect the river's ecosystem..
The cleanup gives residents an opportunity to give back to their community while helping to preserve the Allegheny River. Each year, volunteers recover plastics, tires, metal and other debris from the river and its surrounding areas, helping maintain a healthy aquatic environment.
In 2025, nearly 200 volunteers participated in the cleanup, removing more than 12 cubic yards of trash, 32 tires and 5,700 pounds of recyclable metal.
This year's clean up areas include:
Thursday, Sept. 17 – Buckaloons to Wildwood Inn
Friday, Sept. 18 – Wildwood Inn to Tidioute
Saturday, Sept. 19 – Allegheny Outfitters to Buckaloons
Organizers are seeking about 40 volunteers each day to make the cleanup a success. Registration is required and can be completed at www.alleghenyrivercleanup.com/volunteer.html.
The weekend will conclude with the volunteer appreciation party, known as the River Riot. The event will feature free food, drinks and live music, as well as the annual Trashy Awards.
In addition to the river cleanup, organizers will collect recyclable material at the AutoZone parking lot on Market Street in North Warren from Sept. 11 through 20. A dumpster and sign will be available at the site to advertise the collection. Garbage, tires, mattresses, batteries and electronics will not be accepted.
The cleanup effort also received financial support from Warren County. During their August meeting, county commissioners approved $500 for the Allegheny River Cleanup Crew.
Commissioners recognized the efforts of the volunteers, noting that the project has helped remove significant amounts of garbage and debris from local waterways while providing an important environmental benefit to the county.
