Renovation work on the new downtown location of NY Style Deli and Pizza is continuing, but the restaurant's opening has been pushed back as contractors work to complete several remaining projects.
Owners Leah D'Angelo and Mike Simanowski provided an update during last week’s meeting of the city's Redevelopment Authority (RDA).
D'Angelo said significant progress has been made inside the building, including completion of the flooring throughout the main floor, the kitchen and dining area. The ceilings, lighting and bathrooms also have been completed, along with the electrical work.
"We have been making progress, albeit slow," D'Angelo told RDA members, adding that some delays were outside the project's control.
Contractor scheduling has been one of the biggest challenges, Simanowski said, requiring coordination among several different companies.
Simanowski also stated that fire doors have been installed, plumbing work is being completed, and cable internet has been run to the building.
Simanowski said that although the project's original opening schedule could not be met, he is now hoping the restaurant can open sometime in mid-to-late October.
"I don't want to promise anything now," Simanowski said. "But believe me, if anybody wants it open, it's me."
The RDA previously approved a $140,000 loan to NY Style Deli and Pizza to help complete renovations at the new downtown location. The loan is structured at 3% interest over 15 years, with repayment beginning July 1, and includes personal guarantees from the project's primary owners.
The owners originally sought $150,000 and estimated total project costs at approximately $180,000. The project was initially expected to open in May 2026, with the schedule later pushed into the summer.
D'Angelo and Simanowski invited RDA members to visit the building individually to see the progress firsthand.
