Legion Riders raise $3,500 with 1,000 mile ride

The American Legion Riders Post 658's "1,000 Miles for Veterans" endurance ride was successfully completed September 12-13, (4 a.m. start and 1:15 a.m. finish) raising $3,500 through the generosity of local businesses, organizations and individual donors.
The ride covered 1,017 miles in 21 hours, 7 minutes and 41 seconds. Certified miles will most likely come back at 1,010.5 miles.
The ride has been submitted to the Iron Butt Association for SaddleSore 1,000 certification. To qualify, a rider must document at least 1,000 miles in less than 24 hours. The certification process requires detailed documentation of the route, including fuel and time-stamped receipts, odometer readings, photographs and ride logs so that the mileage and time can be independently verified.
Organizers chose to have the ride certified because they wanted the 1,000-mile claim to mean something.
"Our donors and supporters trusted us when they put their names and money behind this effort, and having an independent organization verify the ride provides legitimacy and accountability to what we accomplished," organizers said. .
Plans are already being discussed to make Miles for Veterans an annual event and provide additional opportunities for riders and the community to participate in the future.
