During the regular squadron meeting this month, C/SSgt Olivia Bennett, of Youngsville, and C/SSgt Troy Redmond of Randolph, were recognized for earning the Wright Brothers award.
Cadets must pass a closed book leadership exam, meet physical fitness requirements, and personally fulfill leadership expectations within the squadron.
The Wright Brothers Award in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program launched in 2003, during the centennial of Orville and Wilbur Wright's historic first flight. Cadets earn the award upon completing Phase I, "The Learning Phase," consisting of the Cadet Program's first three achievements.
As such, the award recognizes excellence in all four areas of cadet life: leadership, aerospace, fitness, and character. In addition, Wright Brothers Award recipients have passed a challenging, closed-book examination testing leadership knowledge and proficiency in drill and ceremonies. Once a cadet earns the Wright Brothers Award, he or she is promoted to the grade of cadet staff sergeant and begins service as a cadet non-commissioned officer.
Cadet NCOs are expected to transition from individuals who have been cared for to young servant-leaders who care for others as they enter Phase II of the Cadet Program - The Leadership Phase.
