Senior Sprint helps students prepare for life after high school

Warren County School District seniors and their families gathered last week at Warren Area High School for Senior Sprint, an annual event designed to help students navigate the many decisions and deadlines that come with their final year of high school.
The event, organized by school counselor Lori Hahn, brought together students, parents, college representatives and other guests for presentations and seminars focused on college, careers, financial aid and life after graduation.
Hahn said she began holding the event four years ago as a way to answer questions from seniors and parents and make the transition into senior year less overwhelming.
"It started out as a 15-minute presentation followed by an open house," Hahn said. "Now we have seminars, recruiters and colleges."
The event has continued to grow. For the first time, Eisenhower students were also invited to participate.
Hahn emphasized that senior year moves quickly and encouraged students to begin preparing early rather than waiting until deadlines approach.
Among the topics discussed were college applications, standardized testing, scholarships, financial aid, transcripts and graduation requirements.
The event also provided students with opportunities to meet representatives from colleges and military recruiters and attend different seminars based on their interests.
For sisters Macy and Ava Greenawalt, the event offered an opportunity to begin thinking about their futures while also enjoying the start of their final year of high school.
Macy said she plans to pursue accounting in college and is interested in attending Edinboro. However, she also spoke to many of the college recruiters who attended the event.
"This has really helped me to picture what the year ahead could look like," Macy said.
Ava shared that she is interested in marketing and is also considering Edinboro. She said the event showed her that students have many different options after graduation.
"I am learning that you don't have to go to college," Ava said. "It is not the only option available."
Both sisters said they are looking forward to spending time with friends and becoming more involved in activities during their senior year.
The school also provided food trucks outside the building to accommodate students arriving directly from sports practices.
As students begin their final year, Hahn’s message was to start early, seek help when needed and enjoy the experience.
"Make sure this year you spend time with family and friends," Hahn told students. "Make sure you have a good senior year."
